Aspiring coaches through the Young Leaders Programme
Actif Sport and Leisure Young Leaders Programme has been aspiring coaches to gain real-world experience while making a positive impact in the community.
The initiative, part of a wider workforce development project, offers young people aged 14+ the chance to develop coaching skills, build confidence, and support local primary school sports events and community clubs.
Led by Actif in collaboration with Netball Wales, this programme offers participants hands-on coaching experience, leadership development, and recognised qualifications.
Young leaders will be supported by Actif staff and experienced coaches to deliver inclusive and engaging netball activities—helping to spark enthusiasm for physical activity among children in the local community.
“This is an incredible opportunity for young people to step into leadership roles and make a difference” said Lyn Brodrick, Active Young People Officer “They’ll gain valuable experience in coaching, teamwork, and communication while helping to strengthen grassroots sport in our community.”
The initiative not only supports the personal and professional growth of participants but also strengthens local clubs and schools that rely on dedicated volunteers to deliver sport at a grassroots level.
By investing in young leaders, the programme aims to build a sustainable local sports workforce and encourage lifelong participation in physical activity.
“We’re passionate about creating pathways for young people to thrive in sport,” added Hilary Jones, Active Young People Co-ordinator. “Whether they go on to become professional coaches, teachers, or community leaders, the skills they develop here will serve them for life.”
The Young Leadership Programme is open to motivated individuals with a passion for sport, leadership, and community engagement. Participants will receive training, mentoring, and opportunities to volunteer at local primary school festivals and club sessions.
