5-day festival of sport - Pembrey & North Dock
Actif supported a five-day festival of sport featuring triathlons and duathlon last week – May 10th to 14th. There were a variety of events spanning different age categories, distances and disciplines.
Colegau Cymru hosted their GO TRI FE (Further Education) Multisport Duathlon on Wednesday, May 10. 400 college students and FE staff from across the country descended on Pembrey Country Park to take part in a Run-Cycle-Run duathlon – with Actif loaning out bikes.
Less than 24 hours later at the National Closed Cycling Circuit, eleven primary schools from across Carmarthenshire were invited to take part in the second annual Actif schools duathlon event at Pembrey Country Park on Thursday, May 11.
In partnership with Welsh Triathlon and Colegau Cymru, the Actif Communities team gave approximately 300 pupils from years 5 and 6 the opportunity to take part in this Run-Cycle-Run event on the Archery Field and the cycling circuit.
Seven miles away in Llanelli, hundreds of competitors and spectators turned out for the 2023 Llanelli Multi-sport festival weekend on May 12 to 14 in perfect conditions.
North Dock, Millennium Coastal Path and the surrounding area hosted five triathlon and duathlon events over three-days for all ages and abilities.
It was organised by Healthy Life Activities and supported by several partners and organisations, along with local clubs and volunteers.
Friday evening, May 12 saw an action-packed programme get underway as 200 participants took part in the 4th edition of the Actif Sport and Leisure Sospan Charity Swim. Four distances were on offer, ranging from 750m, 1500m, 2250m and 3000m. It raised £4,000 towards two local charities, the Jac Lewis Foundation and Ty Bryngwyn Hospice.
There was an opportunity for over 50 children aged 8 to 14 years old to get involved in the Swim Sharks Llanelli Junior Duathlon early on Saturday morning, May 13.
Attention for the next six hours turned to the Actif Sospan Sprint Triathlon (British Super Series) which attracted the best youth, junior and senior triathletes from across the UK to compete in the county.
The second day concluded with the Llanelli Paratriathlon which saw its largest field to date.
At 7am on Sunday, May 14, over 350 registered athletes were on the start line of the AGILIS Llanelli Sprint Triathlon, consisting of a 750m swim, 30km bike and 5km run. Featuring novice and elite club athletes, this was a Welsh sprint championship and the first race of the 2023 Welsh Super Series this season.
Noelwyn Daniel, event organiser at Healthy Life Activities said: “The three-day weekend was a huge success with over 1000 athletes from across the United Kingdom racing in Llanelli.
“It was a truly inclusive weekend of multi-sport action which couldn’t have happened without the generous support of organisations and volunteers.”
The Actif van made its way to North Dock and presentations were made to the award winners from the stage.
Our facilities staff from Llanelli Leisure Centre were in attendance, running a fitness challenge on our assault bike and rower, with a chance to win a 1-month free household membership.
Highlights from the multi-sport festival will be televised on S4C at 8pm on Friday 30th June.
