A Young Ambassador is a volunteer who helps motivate people by creating opportunities to learn new skills and have fun teaching. Becoming a Young Ambassador doesn’t just help other people become healthier, it also builds confidence and knowledge to do what you love – inspiring the next generation of young people to become more active, more often.
Bronze Young Ambassadors
This is the first step for any budding young sports leader to join the leadership pathway.
Who can be a Bronze Ambassador?
Primary school pupils in years 5 & 6 can become an Ambassador.
How do they become an Ambassador?
They could be selected by their teacher or nominated by their peers for being good sporting role models.
What does a Bronze Ambassador do?
- Plan and deliver extra-curricular clubs for Foundation Phase up to Yrs 6
- Update school sport notice board and website
- Promote existing and new sport clubs within the school
- Speak in school assembly and to school governors about the benefits of physical activity
What training and support do they get?
- BYA training day
- Ongoing support and mentoring
Silver Ambassadors
Who can be a Silver Young Ambassador:
- Year 9 to 13 pupils.
How do they become Silver Young Ambassadors?
- After the February half-term, the Participate Officer will speak in a Year 9 and a KS4 assembly about the Young Ambassador scheme, explaining the relationship between this and Welsh Bac, DofE, etc..
- There will be a short open meeting for anyone interested in the role, specifically inviting those who have been recommended by the school where they will be set a short task.
What does a Silver Young Ambassador do?
- They are the pupils’ voice. Taking a whole school approach to getting more people, more active, more often.
- Roles will be identified during March and April following discussion with the PE department and delegated according to pupils strengths: These could be delivering extra-curricular sessions, supporting PE lessons, mentoring B+YAs, helping to complete and action the School Sport Survey Action plan, helping pupils complete the School Sport Survey, taking registers, sorting equipment, sitting on the sports council or social media and marketing. Whatever their role they will have clear tasks with completion dates and targets.
- Regular meetings with the Participate Officer to support and mentor them
- Silver Young Ambassadors will complete a registration form, which will include parental consent.
What Training and support do they get?
- Training will take place during the Easter holiday. The training will include leadership training, an introduction to coaching and clarity around roles and responsibilities along with an opportunity for action planning in line with the Schools School Sport survey action plan.
- They receive 2 mentor sessions a term and regular engagement with the Officer throughout the academic year
Gold Ambassadors
Who can be a Gold Young Ambassador:
Gold Young Ambassadors: Year 10 -13
How do they become Gold Young Ambassadors?
In March of each year there will be a formal recruitment process where applications will be invited and applicants shortlisted will be interviewed. We aim to have a Gold Young Ambassador in each secondary school.
What does a Gold Young Ambassador do?
- They promote and inspire, leading the YA program across Carmarthenshire.
- They will lead the YA team within their school, create and deliver training to lower-level YAs, attend events and public speaking, and create and deliver county-wide projects that get more people, more active, more often.
- Monthly meetings with the Participate Officer and with the Gold YA team.
- Gold Young Ambassadors will complete a registration form, with parental consent.
What Training and support do they get?
- Training will take place during the Easter holiday. The training will include leadership training, an introduction to coaching and clarity around roles and responsibilities along with some additional training throughout the year.
- They will be invited to attend a National conference in October
- The Participate Officers will mentor the GYAs throughout their time in post.
Platinum Ambassadors
This is national recruitment led by the Youth Sport Trust. If successful, the Platinum YA will become part of the national steering group and work with the Local Authority at a strategic level to ensure pupils' voice is heard and actioned. The program offers a range of exciting opportunities to make a difference to sport in Wales.
